Hate the thought of spending years planning your big day? If you want a quickie wedding, take note. The notice period has just increased from 15 days to 28…
These changes, taking place on 2nd March, form part of several measures in the Immigration Act 2014 to tackle illegal migration and are designed to give the Home Office more time to investigate potential sham marriages and civil partnerships in the UK.
This change applies to all couples wherever they are getting married (including abroad) and not just those subject to immigration.
When you have given notice it will be publicly displayed in the register office for 28 days. You may also need to give notice here if you plan to marry or form a civil partnership abroad. Ask the overseas authority if you’ll need a ‘certificate of no impediment’. To find out more, visit the Government’s website here.
